New Ranking System for WATTA
1 How does it work?
All players registered with WATTA have been graded into the following categories:
D1 to D5 (approx 20 - 30 % of all players)
C6 to C10 (approx 30 - 40 % of all players)
B11 to B15 (approx 20 - 30 % of all players)
A16 to A20 (approx 10 - 15 % of all players)
The lowest ranked players will be those ranked D1, consequently the highest ranked players will be the ones ranked A20. Whereof approximately one third of all players are graded within the C categories, approximately a quarter within B and D, and the remaining top players are in A category. This grading has taken place in accordance with the past rankings (ie.2008 results) and under the supervision of Match Director
The ’beauty’ of the new system is that it would capture all results including Pennants, Tournaments, Grand Prix, Cups, etc. Once the grading is updated, all players will be able to access their results from the WATTA Board and website periodically via the WATTA. For example John Wright (graded a C7 at the start of the new season) receives for every rubber won a plus point at the ranking level of his opponent and for every loss a minus point respectively. The table below shows that John won once against a B13 player, once against a B12, twice against a B11 etc, and lost once against a C6, three times against a C7 etc. His current point balance would show that he would have 15 wins and 16 losses at a ’C9’ level which would result in a “promotion” to ‘C9’ for the next table tennis season. The system is very motivating as it considers wins against equal or higher ranked players and losses against equal or lower ranked players and provides the Match Director with a maximum level of flexibility. It also reflects fair and clearly visible outcomes based on all results during the year.
Players grouped in categories are listed as a group, not graded or ranked within that group. That is, all players listed as being C7 are equal within that group, regardless of whether their name appears at the bottom or top of the list of C7 players. (For clarity, active/pennants players are listed on top and non-active players are at bottom, with the same ranking level).
To determine the ranking figures the following principles apply:
Wins against equal or higher ranked players.
Loss against equal or lower ranked players.
Forfeits are not being taken into account.
The comparison between wins and losses forms the basis for the new ranking valid for the next seasons.
Every win results in one plus point, every loss in a minus point at the ranking level with the opponent. As a consequence of this system there will be a “point balance” at each individual ranking number. The point balance was weighted depending on ranking level differences.
It is worthwhile noting that all results count towards the new ranking; the more results a player contributes, the more representative will be the ranking that he/she receive at the start of the new pennant-tournament season.
Should there be a lack of competitive results (non-active players less than 5 results in a year), then that particular player’s ranking will be reduced by 1 ranking level (e.g. reduced from C8 to C7).
2 What about the teams?
Team’s Average Ranking “TAR” (figures are for reference only, applications subject to Entries)
Team Grade 2 Players Team 3 Players Team
A >/ = 33 >/ = 48
B 23 – 30 38 – 45
C 13 – 20 23 – 30
D </ = 10 </ = 15
Individual Players Ranking:
A team shall comprise of player(s) from that Grade.
i.e. Grade A: Players ranking A16 to A20
Grade B: Players ranking B11 to B15
Grade C: Players ranking C6 to C10
Grade D: Players ranking D1 to D5
Player(s) from a lower grade may be added to the Team (e.g. Grade B players may be added to a Grade A Team), subject to TAR weighting.
Players from higher Grades are not allowed to play in lower grade Team (e.g. Grade A player cannot play for Grade B Team, etc), unless otherwise approved by the Match Committee.
For a team with Additional / Reservist / Substitute players, the players’ ranking and playing times will be weighted to get the TAR.
Provisional rankings for non-ranked player(s) (i.e. newcomers, non-pennants players):
Provisional rankings will be given for the above players. Their rankings are subject to a 3 matches review by the Match Committee. When included in a Team, a non-ranked player will be given a temporary “provisional ranking“, (which is determined based on observations and references) by the Match Committee. After a few matches (with results up to 3 matches), the Match Committee shall decide the player’s ranking and determine the TAR accordingly. The Match Director’s decision is final.
The Match Committee reserve the sole discretion to be able to rearrange or forfeit player(s)' matches, whose team does not comply with the weighted TAR for that moment.
