David Brown – WA Development Coach.

The third in a series of Smarter than Smoking, WATTA Junior Graded and Novice Tournaments was conducted at the Black Swan Table Tennis Club in Maddington on Saturday 31st July 2010 and was again highly successful.
This event attracted 23 junior players from various suburbs, both North and South of the river proving once again that distance is not a problem when a competition beckons.
The format for this tournament placed the players in 4 groups, the winner and runner-up position advancing to 2 crossover groups of 4 and the winners of those groups playing for the tournament trophy.
The winner of the tournament was Oliver Valentine (Duncraig S.H.S.) for the first time and Jason Nesbitt (St.Stephens S.H.S) had to be content with Runner-up position in what was the best final I have seen over 5-sets for this competition format.

The tournament was again played in good spirit and there were encouraging sign from a number of players including Eric Tian, James Low, Aaron Jiang and Holly Nicolas who I am sure will go on to future success.
My thanks go out to the Black Swan TTC for hosting this tournament for the first time and hope that we can visit their venue in the future. Unfortunately I will be unable to conduct these competitions for the rest of the year due to unforeseen health issues but have enjoyed every minute of the involvement with developing junior players and hope to be back next year.
The next tournament in the series will be held at the Fremantle Table Tennis Club (Samson RC) on the 18th September 2010.
