Smarter than Smoking Junior Graded Tournament

David Brown – WA Development Coach.

The fourth in the series of Smarter than Smoking Junior Graded and Novice Tournaments was conducted at the WATTA Centre on Saturday 25th July 2009 and although the numbers were down in previous competitions a quality field of players assembled to do battle.

Most of the players in this competition had played in previous rounds, so taking an analysis of the results we distributed the 19 players into 4 graded groups. This in turn provided stiff opposition as all players within the groups were evenly matched.

The winners and runners-up of all these graded groups received medals and then proceeded to 2 further groups of 4 players, the winners of which would contest the Overall Tournament Trophy.

The winner of the tournament was Raymond Poon and the Runner-Up was Alex Henderson both from Mount Pleasant Primary School and members of the State Development Program.

The numbers were a little disappointing given our earlier success but the timing was an issue due to the middle school holiday and other tournament dates.

A total of 87 players took part in this series of competitions, some of whom we would never have seen and this opportunity from a player scouting perspective should not be underestimated.

This was the last competition in the series but I am hoping conduct an Open Junior Tournament in November at the Kingsway Indoor Stadium for all junior players under 18. The exact date is still to be finalized.
